Since this is a largely nihilistic show whose first 10 minutes of music tends to scald the ears with the volume of guitars and percussion, I was surprised to find myself enjoying it. Not nominated was “American Idiot” (at the St. Beside the sheer amount of dance in “Come Fly Away” or “Fela!,” that of “La Cage aux Folles” is small, but, like almost everything else in this production, exquisite. And one Cagelle stretches his/her leg up and over in a phenomenal hyperextension — like a huge wing rising up and over — that perfectly illustrates what fabulously exotic creatures these men/women are. Apart from the clarity of their avian behavior, there is a terrific sense of the force that’s being hemmed in. Page has them all caged together like birds. Even so, it’s the transvestite Cagelles who, among these Tony nominations, stay most marvelously in the mind. Only one item stands out as exceptional, a drunk scene involving Katie Finneran and Sean Hayes, in which dance is just one highlight of an already hilarious interlude.Īlthough I loved everything in “La Cage aux Folles,” its dances (choreographed by Lynne Page) were not topmost in my delight. The nominees are “Come Fly Away” (at the Marquis Theater), “Fela!” (Eugene O’Neill Theater), “Promises, Promises” (Broadway Theater) and “La Cage aux Folles” (Longacre Theater). I don’t envy the Tony judges their task this year: there’s no clear winner. These rewards came from roaming around Broadway to watch the shows nominated for the Tony Award for best choreography, after which I wandered off to catch a couple of non-nominees. It is not without embarrassment that I report my recent delight in a male pole-dancing Pierrot in Cirque du Soleil’s “Banana Shpeel.” And I am somewhat shamefaced in mentioning my pleasure in the caged-birds number performed by the transvestite chorus in the current production of “La Cage aux Folles.” Honestly, as I make these lists, pretty much every recipe from the book is a great choice toward your health and your tastebuds.The pleasures of dance and choreography come from strange sources.
